Many students of higher institutions of learning in Nigeria living in Lokoja, forced to abandon study on account of the break of Coronavirus ravaging the country, have taken to learning some trades and entrepreneurship ventures to kill boredom among other aims.
Duaglobalnews recalls that universities and other higher institutions remain lucked and keyed, shortly after the pandemic virus was first announced in the country on February 27,2020, having broken out in Wuhan, China on December 31,2019.
Some of the students who spoke with the correspondent of Duaglobalnews in Lokoja on Saturday, said that they embarked on such action as the virus to register its presence unabated and resumption of academic activities was fast becoming a mirage.
“For the past three or four months, I have been at home doing nothing except occasional revision of my notes.
“I decided to register with a catering service outfit in town, to learn how to bake cake and manage events while waiting for resumption of academic activities by universities.
“This is better for me rather than using the luck down in my academic activity to indulge in anti-social activity,” Miss Agnes Aliu, a final year political science student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said.
Other students such as Tunde Olorunleke, Tom Ajayi, Kehinde Ehindero, Mohammed Ali and Halimat Abdulkadir and others said they had leveraged on the closure of educational institutions to venture into various entrepreneurial business to acquire new skill.
They identified such trades to include web and fashion designing among others to gain extra knowledge that would be a plus for them after their educational pursuit.
“I have taken to learning how to repair cellphone as away of acquiring practical knowledge to my computer science study in Polytechnic,” Ajayi said.
“I find delight in helping my mother sell rice and other assorted food stuff at the International market, Lokoja,to make my self relevant to the family.
“This gives me ample opportunity learn to be self reliant after my university education,”Halimat an Agriculture economic student of the Kogi state University, Anyigba said.
Investigation by the online publication also shows that some students have opened a couple of emergency car wash outfits and others take to commercial transportation, especially Okada and Keke-Napep and farming, to make ends meet.
Meanwhile, Kogi state government has designed a radio educational programme aimed at teaching Senior Secondary School(SSS 111) and Junior Secondary School (JSS111) students various subjects as they prepare for their final examinations.
