How to check blood sugar level by yourself

It is very important to periodically check your blood sugar level because of the health risk involved in not knowing your blood sugar level.

High blood sugar level could result to diabetes, vision impairment and even death in severe cases.

So, periodic check of one’s blood sugar level could help in the control.

What is a blood glucose test?

A blood glucose test is a test used to determine the level of sugar, called glucose; in the blood.

It is mainly used in screening for any pre-diabetes or diabetes.

There are two types of blood glucose test and they include :

1. Fasting Blood Sugar(FBS) test : The FBS test, is done in the morning before breakfast. And the normal blood sugar level for FBS could range from 65-110 mg/dl.

2. Random Blood Sugar (RBS) is carried out any time after your break fast. It ranges from 75-115mg/dl.

Materials:

1. A glucometer

2. Cotton wool

3. Alcohol

4. A Lancet(a small needle )

5. Glucose strip

Procedures :

1. Dip the cotton wool in alcohol

2. Use the cotton wool dipped in alcohol, to clean your thumb or any finger.

3. Fix the strip to the glucometer

3. Puncture or prick your finger with the lancet

4. Clean off the first blood with a dry cotton wool.

5. Gently massage the finger to allow a drop to form at the punctured site, allowing the blood to drop on the test strip. Which is placed on the glucometer.

Result: Read your result immediately, using the above explanation.
