A four-hours torrential rainstorm, over the weekend, destroyed property worth millions of naira, including the only Squash Court used for training of state players located around David Mark road, Minna, Niger the state capital.
Duaglobalnews reports that the rainstorm also rendered many people homeless along Gidan-Mangoro and Gidan-Kwano near Federal University of Technology (FUT), permanent campus.
The natural disaster also touched residential houses, offices and business structures as well as
washed away make shift buildings.
Also affected were electric poles belonging to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) a development that has thrown Minna into darkness.
Meanwhile, the chairman, Niger State Squash Association (NSSA), Alhaji Mohammad Babujee ,has appealed to well meaning indigenes of the state to come to the aid of the association in rebuilding the Squash Court.
According to him, the court is the only facility for the training of state players.
Babujee, however, said, “We have been pleading with the state government to repair the Squash Court, now that the rains have blown off the ceiling, maybe governmen will be forced to do something”.
The chairman, who attributed the poor performances of the state players to the non-availability of befitting Squash Court for training, expressed confidence that fixing the Court would no doubt bring Niger back to its rightful place in Squash ratings.
He recalled that the state used to be among tops in national ranking said
“Repairing the Squash Court will change the whole thing for the better and that is why we are appealing to well meaning Nigerlites to help us put the place back in order,”he further pleaded.
“For now Niger state has no Squash Court to train players ahead of coming sporting events,”he noted.
He called on the state government to give attention to Sports, Squash in particular, as a way of discouraging youths from indulging in any form of crime.
