The Kwara State Commissioner for Social Development, Mrs Abosede Deborah Aremu, has called on women in politics, particularly those of them holding police office, to put in their best in whatever position they found themselves.
The commissioner made the call in llorin on Monday at inauguration of Project Steering Committe of Women’s Voice and Leadership Nigeria, Global Hope For Women and Children Foundation,an NGO.
Duaglobalnews reports that the programme is also in partnership with Actionaid and Global affairs, Canada.
Aremu, who implored the 15-member commitee to carry out their duty as expected, said the project would addresse gender-based violence in the state.
She said “If you look at the population now, we know that women are more than men, what we are doing is that we are not going to concentrate on the women alone, we will carry the men along as well.
“We, however, frawned at the violation of womens’ rights, this will not be tolerated any longer, women should be able to participate in politics to have a say in the governance of the state.
“The Kwara state governor has passion for women for the fact that he choose among the cabinet nine commissioners out of sixteen, meaning that he put his trust in women, that we can do it better because what a man can do, woman can do it better.”
The Chief Executive Officer of Global Hope for women and Children Foundation, Mrs Christy Abayomi Oluwole, said the inaugurated project steering committe of the foundation would provide oversight function, participate in planning and involve in implementation of projects.
Oluwole added that the foundation would address gender- base violence with a view to making the malace a thing of the past.
“Global Hope for Women and Children foundation is a non governmental organisation which envisioned a society where women, children and other vulnerable population had the opportunity to realise their utmost potential.
” Its gender thematic intervention area include women, economic justice and empowerment programmes, women political participation and leadership, policy advocacy, influencing and providing solution to gender based violence in the society.
Some members of the committee expressed gratitude for being members of the committee and described Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq as gender friendly, given the strategic position women occupied in his cabinet.
